The situation

What has happened

Southern Rail Freight Terminals have sent site measurements and a hand sketch for a steel access platform and stair to the cab of a container crane, under job card JC-26-0418. The platform is about 2.4 metres by 1.8 metres at 3.6 metres above the deck, with a stair, handrails, kickplates and a self-closing gate, to be hot dip galvanised and installed on site. Their engineer will check the handrail heights, stair pitch and tread dimensions against the Australian Standard for fixed platforms, walkways, stairways and ladders. Jodie Ferrante wants detail drawings, a bill of materials and a cost estimate ready for a quote by 25 September, with hours booked to the job card.

Your brief. Produce fabrication detail drawings and a bill of materials for the platform and stair in the CAD system, estimate the material, fabrication, galvanising and installation costs, and prepare the quote pack for the Engineering Office Manager to review, with hours booked to the job card.

What to look for

Evidence guide

Drawings should be complete enough for the workshop to build from without questions: dimensions, weld symbols, material grades, galvanising note and a title block with revision. Check the handrail height, stair pitch and tread dimensions comply with the standard the student names. The estimate must show its workings and assumptions, and the hours booked should be consistent with the work done. The JSA outline should identify work at height and cranage as the key risks.

The student's evidence summary lists every record they created or changed in the systems named above, their notes and the tasks they ticked. Verify it against the deliverables and your own assessment tool.
