Welding procedure specification (WPS)
A written, qualified document that sets the process, consumables, parameters, joint design and positions a welder must use for a particular weld.
Heat number
The identification a steel mill gives to a batch of material, printed on the mill certificate and marked on the steel so it can be traced.
Mill test certificate
A document from the steel producer stating the chemical composition and mechanical properties of a batch of material.
Job card
The record that authorises and tracks a piece of work, carrying the drawings, hours, materials and inspection records from quote to invoice.
Isolation
Physically separating plant from every energy source, locking and tagging the isolation points and proving the plant is dead before work starts.
Hot work
Any task that produces flame, sparks or heat able to ignite material, including welding, thermal cutting and grinding.
Non-conformance report
A record that a product, process or material does not meet a requirement, together with the decision on what to do with it.
Hold point
A stage in an inspection and test plan beyond which work must not proceed until an inspector or the customer has signed it off.
Shutdown
A planned period when a customer's plant is taken out of production so maintenance and repair work can be carried out safely.
Coordinate measuring machine (CMM)
A machine that measures the geometry of a component by probing points on its surface and comparing them with the drawing model.
