Plan and carry out a conveyor pulley bearing changeout
You are a maintenance fitter on the Gladstone field crew.
What has happened
The Mount Errol Quarries October shutdown includes replacing the head and tail pulley bearings on conveyor one and realigning the drive. The bearings have been received under REC-26-0887. The work is carried out under the customer's isolation permit system with Ironbark personal locks on the group lock box, and the laser alignment kit at Gladstone is due for calibration before the shutdown. Bree Sutherland, the Maintenance Services Manager, wants the isolation plan, the JSA and the changeout method prepared before mobilisation, and then wants the changeout carried out and recorded on the job card with the alignment readings and condition findings.
Deliverables
- Isolation plan listing energy sources and isolation points for conveyor one
- Job Safety Analysis for the bearing changeout
- Alignment readings before and after, with the condition report
- Job card JC-26-0420 updated with isolation record, hours and findings
Documents to use
- Mount Errol Quarries October Shutdown Plan Plan
- Isolation and Lockout Procedure Procedure
- Job Safety Analysis Template
- Incident and Hazard Reporting Procedure Procedure
Systems to use
Job Card Register
Tracks every fabrication, machining and maintenance job from quote to close-out with customer, drawing, hours and status.
Plant and Equipment Register
Lists workshop machines, cranes, welding sets, measuring equipment and site tools with inspection, calibration and service status.
Materials and Certificate Register
Records receipts of steel, consumables and spares with purchase order, heat number, certificate reference and the job each item was issued to.
Training and Competency Matrix
Holds each worker's licences, welder qualifications, inductions and training with expiry dates so supervisors can allocate work to people who are current.
Units of competency
Current on training.gov.au for the Manufacturing and Engineering as at 10 September 2026.

Evidence guide
The isolation plan must identify electrical, gravitational and stored mechanical energy and show a test for dead. Look for correct bearing fitting method (heating or pressing on the correct race, never hammering), alignment readings within the tolerance the student states, and a condition report that a customer could act on. The student should have noticed the alignment kit calibration and their own expiring induction in the registers.
