Purpose. This template records the daily pre-start and weekly toolbox talks held at each site, the topics covered, the issues raised by workers and the actions agreed.

1.Purpose of toolbox talks

Toolbox talks are the main way Ironbark consults workers on safety and shares lessons from incidents. A short pre-start is held every shift and a longer toolbox talk is held every Tuesday at each site. The record shows the regulator and the customer that consultation happened and what came out of it.

2.Running the talk

The supervisor or leading hand runs the talk at the start of the shift in the bay or the crib room. Cover the day's jobs, the hazards, any permits, any incidents or hazards from the previous day, and one safety topic. Ask for issues and write them down even if they cannot be fixed straight away.

3.Topics

Rotate topics across welding fume and extraction, manual handling, crane and lifting, isolation, hand and power tool safety, housekeeping, hearing protection, heat stress, and any alert issued by the Quality and Safety Manager. Use an incident from the register where one is relevant.

4.Issues and actions

Every issue raised must have an owner and a date. Issues that cannot be closed by the supervisor must be entered in the WHS incident register as a hazard so they are tracked. Report back to the crew at the next talk on what was done.

5.Filing

File the completed record in the site safety folder and scan it to the document library each week. Records will be kept for five years.
