Hot Work Permit
v3.3
Purpose. This permit is completed before welding, cutting, grinding or heating outside the designated hot work bays and records the precautions taken, the authorisation and the close-out.
1.When a permit is required
A permit is required for all hot work outside Bays 1 and 2 at Dandenong South, including the paint and blast area, the stores, on vehicles, in the yard and at every customer site unless the customer issues its own permit. A permit is valid for one shift and one location only.
2.Before you start
Walk the area with the supervisor. Remove or cover flammable material within ten metres, cover drains and cable trays, position the extinguisher and extraction, and appoint the fire watch. Check cylinders, hoses, flashback arrestors and welding leads. Tick each precaution only after it is in place.
3.Authorisation
The supervisor must inspect the area in person before signing. A permit signed without inspection is invalid. The permit must be displayed at the work location.
4.Fire watch
The fire watch must stay for the duration of the work and thirty minutes after the last hot work. The fire watch must know where the extinguisher and the nearest alarm point are and must not leave without a replacement.
5.Close-out
At the end of the task the worker and the supervisor inspect the area for smouldering material, confirm the fire watch period is complete and sign the close-out. File the permit with the job card.
